There are two types of bark collar. One which shocks the dog and the other that releases a horrible smell when the dog barks.
Most shock collars are adjustable, so if you felt the shock was too strong. You can adjust it so it's not as powerful.
Even the most powerful setting is well within humane regulations.
Some bark collars will shock your dog pointlessly if he or she bumps into something metal.
If your dog has a metal food bowl consider changing it for that reason.
